Pastor Jared Olivetti Resigns After Investigation into Mishandling of Sexual Abuse Reports at Immanuel Reformed Presbyterian Church

By GNGF Design/Development

The Immanuel Reformed Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette, Indiana recently announced the resignation of Pastor Jared Olivetti after the Indianapolis Star investigated reports of mishandled of sexual abuse claims within the church. Three church elders who were identified in the investigation also resigned. The media investigation revealed Olivetti failed to recuse himself after receiving reports that an adolescent boy related to Olivetti allegedly molested several youth members of the church. The investigation included an audio recording that captured Olivetti telling a pastor at a nearby church that the sexual abuse allegations would not be reported to higher authorities within the church.

Olivetti and the three church elders identified in this investigation David Carr, Ben Larson, and Keith Magill all face ecclesiastical charges for failing to act appropriately and with urgency in response to the sexual abuse allegations within the church.

Sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy and trusted advisors within the church community can happen in any faith. Shame, fear, and guilt mixed with religion can be a potent force that intimidates and prevents survivors from speaking up about sexual abuse. It is important to encourage survivors to report abuse so they can get help dealing with the trauma that is often suffered.
