Former UCLA Gynecologist Dr. James Heaps Faces Multiple Sexual Abuse Charges
Nearly two dozen women have reported that Dr. James Heaps sexually assaulted them while he practiced gynecology and obstetrics at UCLA Health. Dr. Heaps worked part-time at the student health center for UCLA from 1983 until 2010. He also had staff privileges at the school’s medical center from 1988 until 2018, when he retired amid allegations of sexual abuse lodged by a patient he treated. According to reports, Dr. Heaps was charged with two counts of sexual battery and one count of sexual exploitation of a patient.

U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner of the Central District of California granted preliminary approval of a $73 million settlement for the medical sexual abuse claims filed by women against Dr. James Heaps. The approval of this settlement comes as Heaps faces 20 counts of sexual battery, exploitation, and criminal assault, which could lead to significant jail time if he is convicted of all charges. Women who were treated by Dr. Hames Heaps are still encouraged to come forward and report any incidents of sexual abuse.

Media reports state UCLA has agreed to a $73 million settlement related to sexual abuse claims filed by women who were patients of Dr. James Heaps who worked at the university’s student health center and had staff privileges at the school’s medical center between 1983 and 2018. This settlement is separate from criminal charges that are filed against Heaps. Court documents indicate Heaps treated more than 2,000 women during the time he practiced at the university. Women who were treated by Dr. James Heaps are encouraged to come forward and report any incidents of sexual abuse.
